Bullitt Center
Autopoiesis LLC collaborated with Ecotrust on a groundbreaking study of the ecosystem services benefits of one of the world's most sustainable buildings, The Bullitt Center. Just a few of these benefits generate shared value equivalent to the incremental investment required for a Living Building.
Economics of Change
Autopoiesis LLC is part of a Bullitt Foundation and MacArthur Foundation supported research team working to catalyze the investment shift toward a restorative built environment. This long-term project is engaging appraisers, lenders, developers, and owners to build transparent, open source models of ecosystem service and social value creation in buildings, neighborhoods, and cities.
Tribal Renewable Energy
Autopoiesis worked with a tribe to establish a Renewable Energy Development Authority to allow tribal ownership and economic benefit from solar, wind, biomass, and other renewable resources. We also helped secure federal seed funding for the Authority.
Open Source Conservation
Autopoiesis LLC provided strategic planning for the Conservation Biology Institute on its Data Basin project, a leading open source platform for conservation data.
Living Economies
We worked with a newly established Family Foundation to explore strategic directions around the support of Local Living Economies, Collaborative Consumption, Commons, and Green Collar Jobs.
Ecological Design
Autopoiesis LLC Partner Stuart Cowan is the co-author of Ecological Design (Island Press 1996/2007), a visionary integration of ecology, complex systems, and design thinking. The book has been translated into 3 languages and widely used as a sustainable design textbook.
Ta S'ina Tokaheya Foundation
Project manager for William McDonough Architects on a long-term ecovillage development project utilizing natural building, renewable energy, biodynamic agriculture ,GIS mapping, and other community economic development opportunities. Built a prototype of an affordable hydraulic pressed block adobe house with a renewable energy system. 
O'yate O'Tipi Tawapi
“Emily’s Simple Dream Home” pioneered a program for designing your own home using local and natural building materials in which the community members would assist in building each other’s houses. With Lakota builders, designed, gathered volunteer support, secured grant funds and built an affordable demonstration strawbale home on Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota. |
Ecological Forestry
Autopoiesis LLC helped a leading rural Community Development Entity secure an $85 million allocation of federal New Markets Tax Credits, allowing hundreds of thousands of acres to be transitioned to FSC certified forestry while stabilizing rural communities.
Fruehauf House and Hai Shan Clinic
We served as sustainable designer and project manager for the largest leichlehmbau (light-straw clay) structure in North America. The project was featured on the cover of Portland Spaces in 2009.
Community Finance
We structured, sourced, and secured $4.5 million in tax-advantaged state bonds, community loans, and capital campaign donations, facilitating the renovation of an historically significant 1920s structure into a much-needed new wing of the Cedarwood Waldorf School.
One Planet Living
Autopoiesis LLC worked with Sonoma Mountain Village and BioRegional North America on financing strategies for large-scale projects meeting the visionary One Planet Living standard - bringing ecological footprints of residents to a globally sustainable level.
Innovation Hub
Autopoiesis LLC worked with the Left Bank Project on design concepts and strategy for this 70,000 s.f. renovation project resulting in an unparalleled hub of "craft, creativity, bikes, brewing, coffee, slow food, art, reuse, and community."
Courtyard Housing Competition
Autopoiesis LLC Partners joined with Michael Mehaffy, Susan Ingham, Kyriakos Pontikis, and Eileen Tumlin from the Building Process Alliance in this entry for the international Portland Courtyard Housing Competition.
Ecotone Community
Autopoiesis LLC created a development proposal for a carbon neutral village cluster of 10 small homes surrounded by biodynamic agricultural land.
Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary
Generated a land-use and facilities plan for a 280-acre campus in Monroe, Michigan for a Catholic order. Led a visioning process resulting in a commitment to sustainable buildings and facilities, ultimately resulting in a massive renovation of the 375,000 s.f. motherhouse complex by Susan Maxman Architects, and received a 2006 AIA Committee on the Environment Award 
Sustainable San Domenico
San Domenico School is a recipient of the prestigious U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Award for excellence in sustainability practices. Kathryn Langstaff, developed an ecological literacy curriculum in San Anselmo, California for this K-12 Catholic school. She developed an innovative curriculum with the theme of ecological design science that links building, site, and landscape scales and involved students of all ages in mapping and designing infrastructure, buildings, and site, resulting in an integrated sustainability curriculum. | ||||||||||
