Bullitt Center
Autopoiesis LLC collaborated with Ecotrust on a groundbreaking study of the ecosystem services benefits of one of the world's most sustainable buildings, The Bullitt Center. Just a few of these benefits generate shared value equivalent to the incremental investment required for a Living Building.
Economics of Change
Autopoiesis LLC is part of a Bullitt Foundation and MacArthur Foundation supported research team working to catalyze the investment shift toward a restorative built environment. This long-term project is engaging appraisers, lenders, developers, and owners to build transparent, open source models of ecosystem service and social value creation in buildings, neighborhoods, and cities.
Tribal Renewable Energy
Autopoiesis worked with a tribe to establish a Renewable Energy Development Authority to allow tribal ownership and economic benefit from solar, wind, biomass, and other renewable resources. We also helped secure federal seed funding for the Authority.
Open Source Conservation
Autopoiesis LLC provided strategic planning for the Conservation Biology Institute on its Data Basin project, a leading open source platform for conservation data.
Living Economies
We worked with a newly established Family Foundation to explore strategic directions around the support of Local Living Economies, Collaborative Consumption, Commons, and Green Collar Jobs.
Ecological Design
Autopoiesis LLC Partner Stuart Cowan is the co-author of Ecological Design (Island Press 1996/2007), a visionary integration of ecology, complex systems, and design thinking. The book has been translated into 3 languages and widely used as a sustainable design textbook.

Ecological Forestry
Autopoiesis LLC helped a leading rural Community Development Entity secure an $85 million allocation of federal New Markets Tax Credits, allowing hundreds of thousands of acres to be transitioned to FSC certified forestry while stabilizing rural communities.
Fruehauf House and Hai Shan Clinic
We served as sustainable designer and project manager for the largest leichlehmbau (light-straw clay) structure in North America. The project was featured on the cover of Portland Spaces in 2009.
Community Finance
We structured, sourced, and secured $4.5 million in tax-advantaged state bonds, community loans, and capital campaign donations, facilitating the renovation of an historically significant 1920s structure into a much-needed new wing of the Cedarwood Waldorf School.
One Planet Living
Autopoiesis LLC worked with Sonoma Mountain Village and BioRegional North America on financing strategies for large-scale projects meeting the visionary One Planet Living standard - bringing ecological footprints of residents to a globally sustainable level.
Innovation Hub
Autopoiesis LLC worked with the Left Bank Project on design concepts and strategy for this 70,000 s.f. renovation project resulting in an unparalleled hub of "craft, creativity, bikes, brewing, coffee, slow food, art, reuse, and community."
Courtyard Housing Competition
Autopoiesis LLC Partners joined with Michael Mehaffy, Susan Ingham, Kyriakos Pontikis, and Eileen Tumlin from the Building Process Alliance in this entry for the international Portland Courtyard Housing Competition.
Ecotone Community
Autopoiesis LLC created a development proposal for a carbon neutral village cluster of 10 small homes surrounded by biodynamic agricultural land.
